I never wanted to become an entrepreneur. However, circumstances and a desire from God pushed me into that direction.

Two years ago, I found myself sitting at my 9 to 5 job realizing that I was spending my life’s energy and time doing things that had little to no meaning to me. A lightbulb went off in my head, and I awoke to all the possibilities of working for myself.

When I dove into becoming an entrepreneur, I thought it would be all about building a business. But, there was a whole other side to it.

Besides building a business, I had to build myself.

Essentially, I had to step up and become the person I needed to be in order to live my purpose and bring my dreams into reality.

How are you stepping up to become the person you need to be to lead your community? Become an entrepreneur? Or, start up a non-profit?

These are the lessons I’ve learned on that journey to becoming the boss of me:

Lesson 1: What Are You Supposed To Learn?

I knew that working a 9 to 5  job wasn’t for me. I disliked going into work and building an empire for someone else. However, despite my desire for something more, I had to look deep inside and figure out what I was there to learn. There is a lesson learned in every season of your life, if you pause long enough to figure it out.

So, while you’re working mornings and evenings on your side hustle, what can you learn from your current situation? What lessons, skills, and knowledge can you learn there that will take you to the next level?

As I look back, I’m grateful for my 4 years at my job. I learned how to deliver webinars, write ebooks, and create video tutorials. These are all skills that I’m currently using to build my course coaching business.

Lesson 2: Know What You Want

What do you truly want? Spend some quiet time reflecting on this question. Release the inner dialog, forget the naysayers, and ignore family and friends. What is it that you want out of life?

Answering this question was one of the biggest ah-has and the absolute best motivator to keep me moving forward. I gave myself permission to be selfish. I realized that if I were to become my best self, I needed to spend time doing what I wanted.

Lesson 3: Who’s In Your Circle?

Are you surrounding yourself with people who will bring you down? Or, are you surrounding yourself with people who will propel you forward? Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” So, ask yourself, who’s in your circle? And, will they help you get to the next level? Sometimes this means leaving people who are not serving you or are not catapulting you towards your purpose.

Lesson 4: Pop the Champagne

I’m the kind of person who accomplishes something small and then immediately puts her head down to start working on the next goal. I’ve learned to celebrate the small stuff. If someone buys my ebook from my website, I celebrate. If I get a new subscriber to my email list, I celebrate.

Celebrating the small things makes room for the larger accomplishments to appear. It really comes down to being happy in the moment. So, yup, I’m popping the champagne on all occasions!

Lesson 5: Take Action, Even if It’s Imperfect Action

Perfectionism will keep you stuck. It took me almost 9 months to create a product and sell it on my website. During that time, I continued to tinker with my header, perfect my blog writing, and randomly post to Social Media. A funny thing happened when I stopped being perfect and sold a product — I made money!

Where are you letting yourself stay stuck?

How is perfectionism preventing you from accomplishing your goals?

As you become more of the leader that you need to be to lead your life and community, think about the lessons that you have learned and will learn along the way. Embrace that journey and the knowledge that comes with it.

It’s your turn:
